Embracing Chiropractic Treatment for Sciatica Relief

Sciatica is not a mystery condition, but its symptoms can, on occasion, be somewhat mysterious. Sciatic pain ranges from mild discomfort to a sharp, dagger-like sensation that appears suddenly and can end just as quickly. Occasionally, the pain, which can extend from the lower back through the buttocks and radiate down each leg along the path of the sciatic nerve, causes only a dull ache in the upper thigh, a sharp pain around the knee and a numbness or tingling sensation nearer the foot. The pain can make sleeping impossible and sitting uncomfortable. Movement often does not ease the discomfort. Usually, only one side of the body is affected; infrequently, the pain may "travel" from one leg to the other.

What Causes Sciatica?

It is generally agreed that sciatica is caused by a herniated spinal disc or by a bone spur on specific vertebrae. The result is a pinched   sciatic nerve, the largest and longest in the body. Occasionally, sciatic pain is caused by a tumor, or the nerve is damaged by another disease. Strain or injury to the piniformis muscle, located at the lower spine and connecting with the thigh bone, can also be a cause of sciatic pain. Acute trauma from a sports injury or automobile accident can trigger sciatic pain, and complications from diabetes may cause sciatic nerve pain. Rheumatoid arthritis sufferers sometimes experience the radiating pain characteristic of sciatica in connection with joint inflammation.

Risk factors include aging and obesity, both of which cause spinal changes that contribute to disc damage. However, occupations that require heavy lifting and twisting or extended periods of sitting either in an automobile or at a desk are also cited as causal factors. There does seem to be an inherited tendency toward sciatica, and the condition can recur.

Mild cases of sciatica usually improve after about six weeks, even without treatment. Symptoms are treated with a wide variety of therapies, ranging from over the counter medications to surgery.

Treating Sciatica Pain the Right Way

There may be no single best way to alleviate sciatic pain, but there are a number of therapies that bring proven relief. Our chiropractor first tries to isolate the cause of the pain. Because sciatic pain is a symptom of another, underlying condition, is is important to determine the root cause. Our assessment will include a thorough examination, augmented by digital X-Ray if necessary to ascertain the location and extent of the condition that is causing your pain.

The next steps are to formulate a personalized treatment plan; that may include gentle spinal manipulation and massage, applications of heat or cold, an individualized set of exercises to perform on your own schedule and in your own home, and nutritional and dietary guidance. Our team will work with you to realize your personal wellness goals. We can also explore with you other options for pain relief, including acupuncture, yoga, herbal treatments, heat therapy, cold compresses, electrical therapies or topical liniments. We do not hesitate to recommend other specialists if necessary.

Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches - Studies Explain Results

We Care

Dr. Jeffrey Garofalo, a Bolingbrook chiropractor, understands the serious impact chronic headaches, neck, and back pain can have on people's lives. There is a logical and sensible reason why Chiropractic medicine begins to work during the very first session. Patients see progress in eliminating the pain caused by headaches, and find that their headaches do not return, once treated for the root cause of the pain.

Getting Help for Headache Pain - Where do Headaches Come From?

Various types of Headaches have different root causes. Some are understood better than others are. Nine out of ten people in the United States suffer from headache pain. Many people who do not want to deal with the side effects of medications that dull the pain, are looking for alternative treatment. Best solutions focus on treating the root cause of the pain. Where there is pain there is something not right. Pain is a warning that there is disorder in the body, simply taking a blocker for the pain is not usually the right solution.

According to medical studies using the scientific method to gather clinical data for research and analysis, The University of Maryland Medical Center used study groups of people who suffer from headaches, including migraines of different types. They reported their findings with relation to different treatments and their effectiveness in treating headaches, including the use of Chiropractic healing methods. Several clinical trials of groups using medication, diet control to avoid migraine triggers, massage therapies and Chiropractic adjustments were analyzed, and data that was collected comprehensively evaluated.

Which Treatment Works Best?

Based on studies of treatments alternative to medications, homeopathic treatment is shown to significantly reduce only one in four patient's headache pain, depending on the frequency, severity, and duration of the type of headache or migraine. Massage and physical therapy using pressure on specific reflex point can allow patients to take less medication which is a help in reducing "down time", or time off work due to migraine pain and nausea. Reflexology also helps patients recognize their body signals, they are alerted of an oncoming headache before the pain begins. Patients are able to use another method of treatment to stop the pain cycle like medication, diet control to prevent triggers, and Chiropractic manipulation to reduce stress, tension, and poor physical alignment. Of all the group studies examined in these nine studies, patients in the Chiropractic groups reported 90 percent reduction of migraine attacks.

In one study, three groups of patients were given different modes of treatment, one group was given a drug for headaches called Elavil, the second group was given Chiropractic therapy treatments, and the third was given both medication and Chiropractic treatments. The second group had the best results; they had no side effects from the medication that group one and three experienced. Group three showed no advantage in benefits from being given both treatments. The conclusion was that solving the root problem that causes the pain using Chiropractic examination and therapy, removes the cause of the pain more effectively than just blocking the pain.

Study groups that got the Chiropractic therapy part of each study always reported less episodes of headaches with continued Chiropractic treatments. Depending on the source of the pain, professional Chiropractic specialists can relieve the areas of stress, tension or maladjustment so that swelling, "pinching of nerves,” and inflammation can be released and the body can effectively heal itself. Once the root of the pain is resolved, the body's natural warning mechanism no longer sends out the message of pain.

Whether your headaches began after a vehicle accident, or started getting worse over time, Bolingbrook Headache Relief can discern where the pain is coming from, and what your body is trying to tell you. You may need to have regular Chiropractic manipulations, paired with exercise, super foods, and relaxation techniques. The point is you do not have to go through life treating pain with medication, when alternative treatment methods can find and resolve the cause of your headaches.

Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain

Chiropractic Treatment for Neck Pain

Neck pain is one of the perils of modern life.  It has many possible causes, from sleeping in the wrong position to poor posture, or even spending too much time in front of the computer or behind the steering wheel.  Neck injuries and degenerative disease can also cause pain in varying degrees; although the most obvious type of injury is whiplash, other more minor injuries can also result in pain and stiffness.

Whatever the cause, most of us will experience neck-related pain at some point in our lives and chiropractic care is a drug-free, non-surgical option for dealing with it.  In fact, a 2012 study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, found chiropractic care to be markedly more effective for relieving neck pain than non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen and naproxen, or even narcotics—and the effects were still evident an entire year later.  If you’re seeking Bolingbroke neck pain relief, chiropractic care may be the answer you’re looking for.

Some conditions which may benefit from chiropractic treatment include:

  • Cervical (neck) sprains
  • Whiplash
  • Cervical degenerative joint syndrome
  • Whiplash
  • Nerve impingement

A common misconception about chiropractic care is that it only entails spinal and cervical manipulation.  In actuality, most chiropractors adopt a holistic approach which aims to treat the whole person.  This means that your chiropractor may employ a range of other treatments in addition to spinal manipulation.

Many issues contribute to neck pain, including stress, muscular tension, and trigger points, and because you are an unique individual with your own unique contributing factors, your treatment will also be unique. Treatment varies depending on your diagnosis, and may include options as diverse as stress management and nutritional consultation in addition to actual physical manipulation.  Possible treatments may include:

  • Manual manipulation – this is the classic adjustment that comes to mind for most people when they think of chiropractic.  The chiropractor uses his or her hands to apply gentle pressure and manipulate the spine.
  • Instrument-assisted manipulation – employs a hand-held tool to apply gentle force to the spine.
  • Therapeutic massage – tense muscles often contribute to neck pain, and therapeutic massage works to relieve muscular tension.  Massage also makes cervical manipulation easier, and decreases the likelihood of newly-adjusted vertebrae being pulled back out of alignment by tight muscles.
  • Manual stretching and resistance exercise – like therapeutic massage, manual stretching and resistance techniques work to relax tense neck muscles and relieve pain.  Stretching and resistance techniques can also help restore balance and improve head and neck posture, reducing the incidence of pain recurring.
  • Trigger point therapy – trigger points, sometimes mistakenly called “pressure points” are small, intensely tender areas within a muscle, which refer pain to other areas.  They are a common cause of both neck pain and headaches.  Trigger point therapy works to release trigger points, thus relieving pain and muscular tension which may contribute to neck pain.
  • Inferential electrical stimulation – stimulates the neck muscles with a very mild electrical current, relieving pain and stiffness by encouraging muscles to relax.
  • Ultrasound – uses sound waves to gently release tension in muscles.   Ultrasound is a very soothing and gentle therapy.

Ultrasound, electrical stimulation, massage, trigger point therapy and stretching are usually used in conjunction with manual or instrument-assisted manipulation.  These techniques all work together to re-align, re-balance, and eliminate pain without drugs or surgery.

Chiropractic Treatment for Back Pain

Chiropractic Treatment for Back Pain

Those who suffer from chronic back pain know just how excruciating and uncomfortable it can be; specifically, severe back pain may affect your ability to perform every day tasks and could even prevent you from being able to work. If you've been dealing with back pain and are seeking a viable, long-term solution, then maybe it's time to consider Bolingbrook back relief help from an experienced and professional chiropractor.

What Treatment Options Are Available?

Depending on the specific cause of your back pain, there are multiple chiropractic treatment options available to you that have been proven to be effective. For instance, one of the most common treatments for back pain is that of a spinal adjustment or spinal manipulation.

This technique involves the skilled manipulation of the spine to improve alignment, thus reducing pain and pressure points. With a chiropractic adjustment, patients are asked to lie face-down on a flat, padded table. The chiropractor then uses his or her hands to manipulate the spine, during which time the patient may hear and/or feel a few "pops." This is perfectly normal and should not cause any pain.

Many patients who suffer from lower back pain or chronic headaches caused by back pain find that adjustments are a viable form of relief. In some cases, relief is instantaneous, whereas others report a gradual decrease in pain in the hours and days following the treatment.

In addition to spinal alignment, chiropractic treatment could also involve specific exercises and stretches that are designed to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve (for those experiencing sciatic nerve pain) or other discs in the spine. Those whose chiropractors recommend at-home exercises and stretches as a form of treatment should follow the regimen closely to ensure the best results.

What to Expect From Your First Chiropractic Appointment

If you've never been to a chiropractor before, you may be wondering what to expect during your first appointment in an attempt to relieve your back pain. Generally, you'll begin with an overall physical assessment. The chiropractor will want to get a better idea of the location and severity of your pain, along with what may be causing it. As such, you should expect to be asked some basic questions about your back pain during the first appointment, such as:

  • where is the pain centralized?
  • on a scale of 1-10, how severe is your back pain?
  • has your back pain prevented you from performing everyday activities?
  • do you have any diagnosed spine conditions, such as scoliosis?

From there, your chiropractor may also decide to order a series of x-rays on your neck and spine to further confirm his or her diagnosis regarding your pain. Only from there will your chiropractor be able to develop the best plan of treatment. At that point, you may elect to have your treatment done that same-day (if possible), or your chiropractor may suggest that you schedule an appointment for later in the week.

As you can see, there are many ways in which chiropractic treatment can help alleviate your back pain. Whether it's lower back pain caused by scoliosis, neck pain caused by a work-related injury, or anything in between, a chiropractor is often your best bet for getting the treatment you need for long-term relief.

Shoulder Sport Injuries and Chiropractic Care

Posted: March 24, 2015
By: Dr Jeffrey Garofalo

should pain with Dr Garofalo a Chiro in Bolingbrook Il.Exercise has many benefits. One of the most important is strengthening the heart, bones, and joints. However, exercise through strenuous sports means an elevated risk of injuries. Quite often, injury occurs when a person is just beginning a sport as a means of physical activity, fails to use the correct safety equipment, or simply overdoes it.

While sports participants are typically concerned about fractures, the structures most often injured are actually muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Among the most common areas affected are shoulders, ankles, knees, elbows, and spine. The practice of chiropractic offers options to treat such injuries, as well as help prevent many of them.

How Shoulder Injuries Occur

Anyone – professional or enthusiast – who participates in certain sports undergoes activity that can cause shoulder injuries. Among the most common sports are running, football, basketball, and baseball, all of which involve repetitive motions. Sports practices are typically physically exhausting and put considerable strain on the body. They can result in painful strains, sprains, and even tears.

This exertion can cause severe pain in muscles of the shoulder and arm. An individual might note sore shoulder muscles, pain that moves through the arm, and tingling all the way to the fingers. Athletes might also experience bruising and swelling. When acute damage occurs to joints in the shoulder area, an individual could develop fever and swelling linked to infection. It can become difficult to move the shoulder.

Treating Shoulder Sports Injuries

Prompt treatment of a shoulder sports injury is necessary to prevent additional damage. In some cases, X-rays, ultrasound, or an MRI could be required to rule out a fracture. Chiropractors help patients with shoulder sports injuries by relieving the pain and helping them to heal more quickly following an injury.

A visit to New Life Chiropractic in Bolingbrook, IL begins with taking a patient’s health history and performing a structured exam to check posture, spine, and balance. After examining the back, extremities, joints, tendons, and ligaments, the chiropractor will recommend the treatment options most beneficial for the injury.

By placing a patient in various positions and performing manipulations, a chiropractor releases pressure on a targeted joint. This aligns joints and muscles so that they function in the correct manner. In some cases, rest provides an important part of treatment. Anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce shoulder swelling and medications to alleviate pain also have a role in treating some injuries.

Preventing Injuries

For individuals active in sports in the Bolingbrook, IL area, regular visits to New Life Chiropractic can help assure improved balance and overall performance. Working with a chiropractor who has a focus on sports medicine and who has significant experience treating athletes can be extremely helpful to anyone actively participating in a physically demanding sport.

Scheduling regular check-ups can be beneficial to sports participants. In many cases, it’s possible to steer clear of further injuries. Proper conditioning and both warm-up and cool-down activities play important roles. A chiropractor who treats many sports injuries will be able to offer specific tips for avoiding reinjury.

Cervical Herniated Disc- Disc Injuries and Chiropractic Care

Posted: March 24, 2015
By: Dr Jeffrey Garofalo

Developing a cervical herniated disc can be a very uncomfortable and stressful experience for a patient. Sometimes the resulting pain in the neck or back is excruciating. Chiropractic care is a non-surgical way of bringing relief for this condition.

Dr Garofalo with New Life Chiropractic in Bolingbrook, IL focuses on treating disorders arising from the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. Chiropractors use drug-free, hands-on treatments, recommend rehabilitative exercises and therapeutic activities, and provide advice on lifestyle and nutritional concerns.

What is a Cervical Herniated Disc?

Dr Garofalo a Chiropractor in Bolingbrook il The spine consists of two general areas. The cervical portion refers to the neck, while the lower back is called the lumbar spine. The spine consists of bones known as vertebrae. Seven vertebrae occur between the head and the chest and are known as the cervical spine.

Healthy discs cushion the vertebrae and keep the spine flexible. They work much like shock absorbers. A cervical herniated disc occurs when a disc in the cervical spine develops cracks or tears in its outer layer, allowing the jellylike material inside to escape. This can cause it to slip, bulge, rupture, or break into pieces.

The most common symptoms associated with a cervical herniated disc include:

  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Weakness in the neck, chest, shoulders, arms, and hands
  • Tingling in other areas such as the legs

Herniated discs are usually the result of wear and tear. Aging causes discs to lose fluid and flexibility. Spinal injuries can also cause herniation. Some cervical herniated discs are the result of a combination of both degeneration and injury. Repetitive activities like lifting or even sitting at a computer for hours on end can boost the risk of disc injuries.

Chiropractic Treatment for Cervical Herniated Discs

The optimal outcome for this condition is relief through non-surgical means. For individuals in the Bolingbrook, IL area with signs of this problem, a visit to New Life Chiropractic is the first step toward diagnosis and relief of pain and other symptoms.

At an initial visit, the chiropractor will review a patient’s medical history, complete a physical examination, and perform neurological and orthopedic tests. The doctor will be specifically concerned about several things:

  • Whether reflexes are intact
  • If the patient shows signs of muscle strength loss or muscle wasting
  • Whether there is any loss of sensation along a nerve path

The chiropractor will also examine the patient’s posture. A diagnosis might require ordering X-rays or an MRI. A complete evaluation includes examining the entire spine even if discomfort appears to be in the lumbar portion. This is because occurrences in one section of the spine can exert an influence over other spinal areas or other parts of the body.

After making a diagnosis of a cervical herniated disc, a chiropractor will recommend a treatment plan tailored to the exact condition. This individualized course of treatment typically includes manual therapy and a therapeutic exercise regimen. Chiropractic treatment of these damaged discs consists of gentle, low-force treatments rather than forceful adjustments to “pop” a disc into place. In many cases, patients require more than a few fast treatments to obtain the best results.
